Theatre with an Edge

The next Rounded Circles Theatre Co (RCTC) is set to explode, with fire, Sound art and Contemporary Theatre. Set in the idealic and picturesque Kuranda Amphitheatre, ‘B’ breaks conventional models of what theatre should be, and invites the audience to be part of the production.

The work developed through the RCTC Generation B programme, explores the world of the FNQ rave scene, and the different and obscure worlds of the mind and its interpretation. ‘The world of the rave is created in and around the audience, so anyone who has never been to a rave, will experience the sounds and visuals associated with this popular youth culture. We will also be playing with elements of multi-media including, film, sound art, and 3D imagery. It’s certainly a show that should not be missed, and will be hard to forget!’ (Director – Amy Losiak)

The Generation B programme, engaged several young artists between 17-25 in a series of theatrical mentorship’s including:  Acting, Playwriting, Set and Costume Design, Stage Management and Lighting Design. The idea of the programme was to prepare the participants for the industry and expose them to the theatrical process. So far they have worked with top industry peers, such as Carol Burns, Michael Fultcher and Sven Swenson and performed at the Cremorne Theatre in Brisbane as part of the Two High Festival run by Backbone Youth Arts. They have networked with the likes of Michael Gow (Artistic Director Queensland Theatre Co) Sean Mee (Artistic Director – La Boite Theatre), Suellen Maunder (Artistic Director – JUTE), whilst attending a series of workshops, professional rehearsals at JUTE, shows, and mentoring sessions. The show will also be toured to the La Luna Youth Arts Festival in Townsville and a preview has been included in the Just Us Theatre Ensemble (JUTE) Playwrights Conference.

‘We never expected the show would reach the level it has, but along the way, we have had wonderful support from several artists throughout the community including Doof DJ artist, Reuben Rusch, Fire Artist – Jon Willerton and Brad Russell, visual artist – Blake and Contemporary Designer Lizii Prince. These elements will just add that extra dimension to the show and assist us in allowing the audience to become a proactive part of the experience.

The Generation B project, is more then just offering young artists skills development, it is about celebrating a youth culture and voice, and offering theatre that is interesting and relevant to both young and mature audiences’. (Artistic Director – Amy Losiak)
